[Image: Scene from the groundbreaking ceremony of Sanxiang Company’s electrolytic manganese slag recycling project] The Songtao County Party Committee and County Government have prioritized the management of manganese pollution and the high-quality development of the manganese industry as their "top political priority." In response, manganese-related enterprises in Songtao County have taken proactive measures, actively assuming responsibility for pollution control. At the end of 2022, Songtao Sanhe Manganese Industry Group Co., Ltd. joined forces with Hunan Jianxiang High-Tech New Technology Company to establish Sanxiang Company, which is now constructing and implementing this landmark project—processing 1 million tons of electrolytic manganese slag annually through resourceful recycling and comprehensive utilization—in Songtao County. This initiative represents a pioneering effort in achieving low-cost, harmless, and sustainable treatment and resource recovery of manganese slag in the region. The project is planned to require a total investment of 180 million yuan, with a designated site area of 73.191 mu. Chen Jianxiang, General Manager of Sanxiang Company, stated: "Once operational, the project will be capable of processing 1 million tons of electrolytic manganese slag each year, producing 600,000 tons of cement-based building materials suitable for use as cementitious materials. Based on a price of 45 yuan per ton, this process will effectively eliminate 1 million tons of waste annually, generating an annual revenue stream of 27 million yuan from these valuable cementitious products." The project employs a two-stage calcination technology designed specifically to treat electrolytic manganese slag. It combines low-temperature drying and deamination with high-temperature activation and sulfur fixation through calcination, optimizing the processes of ammonia removal at low temperatures and sulfur stabilization along with heavy metal immobilization during high-temperature treatment. This approach maximizes the extraction of ammonia nitrogen from the slag, fixes sulfur compounds, and stabilizes harmful heavy metals, ultimately enabling the production of high-quality cementitious materials essential for the construction industry. With the official launch of this project, Songtao County will now fill the critical gap in large-scale applications for the harmless treatment and resourceful utilization of manganese slag—a breakthrough that not only facilitates the effective commercialization of cutting-edge scientific and technological advancements but also addresses key challenges in the high-quality development of the manganese industry. This initiative ushers in a new chapter for the resourceful use of manganese slag, paving the way for Songtao County—and even the broader "Manganese Triangle"—to achieve a lasting solution to manganese pollution. Moreover, the project holds groundbreaking significance for the global community, setting a precedent for the innovative and sustainable treatment and recycling of manganese slag worldwide.
