Physical properties Silver-white metal, hard and brittle. Belongs to VIIB group element. Density 7.44 g/cm3. Melting point 1244 ℃. In the solid state it exists in four allotropes, alpha manganese (body-centered cubic), beta manganese (cubic), gamma manganese (face-centered cubic), and delta manganese (body-centered cubic). The ionization energy is 7.435 electron volts. Chemical properties Manganese is located in the fourth period of the periodic table, group VIIB. It is a relatively active metal. It can combine with oxygen when heated, and is easily soluble in dilute acid to form divalent manganese salts. The chemical valences of manganese are +2, +3, +4, +5+6 and +7. Among them, +2 (compound of Mn2+), +Chemicalbook4 (manganese dioxide, a natural mineral), +7 (permanganate, such as KMnO4), +6 (manganate, such as K2MnO4) are stable oxidation states.
